What is a parylene coating suitable for?
If there are increased demands on the protective effect of assemblies, for example in the electronics or aerospace industry, parylene coating can be the best possible solution.
The hydrophobic polymer film has many unique properties. Parylene is lightweight and can be applied as an extremely thin, homogeneous layer. The film is completely smooth and transparent. No undesirable effects such as surface tensions occur during coating. This makes the layer extremely resistant to external influences.

It is resistant to aggressive media and liquid hydrocarbons (petrol, diesel, glycol) and can be used as a diffusion barrier against gases. The parylene coating also passes the salt spray test without negative effects. The polymer is also biocompatible. During the coating process, a film with a thickness of 1 μm to 50 μm is usually applied. The homogeneous application of the polymer film makes it possible to produce an extremely dense and pore-free protective layer. Parylene can also coat hard-to-reach areas and complex 3D structures, such as deep and narrow crevices.

Parylene Process
Parylene coating is a three-stage process in which parylene in its monomeric form is deposited onto the substrate in a vacuum chamber to build a polymer conformal coating.
The first step is the vaporization of solid dimer. The dimer is heated to a temperature of 175 °C, becoming gaseous.
The gas is then pyrolyzed (thermochemical cleavage of organic compounds) to convert the dimer into its monomeric form.
The monomeric gas is deposited in the deposition chamber at room temperature as a transparent polymer film. The resulting coating thickness can vary with the application and ranges between 1 µm and up to 50 µm.
