Electric Motors Are in Demand

Electric motors are used worldwide and support us in our daily lives, but many of the older technologies are severely outdated and inefficient. According to a recent Financial Times article, modern technologies represent a significant improvement and “even exceed current regulatory requirements as well as the requirements for the next two years.”

Ecodesign Regulation
The new EU Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 came fully into force on July 1, 2021, for low-voltage induction motors and variable speed drives. The new industry standard requires a wide range of electric motors to meet the IE3 (“Premium Efficiency”) efficiency standard.
However, July 1 is only the first step in a two-year transition process towards even higher efficiency. In July 2023, the regulation was expanded, raising the minimum level for certain motors to the IE4 standard (“Super Premium Efficiency”). The EU’s leading role in this area is ambitious and sets standards for all countries seeking to reduce their CO₂ emissions.
